The root of the name "Mary" is actually "Mara". Both name originated in the Hellenistic world during pagan days. In general, the name usually has the idea of a large space, in the feminine sense, as a womb in a certain sense. Properly understood, it means "Great Mother", usually in referance to the ocean, where all life is often to have said to come from. What is interesting are the European ideas of Mer, Mir, Bride(al) etc., especially the sea gods considered the Horse as thier sacred animal.
To me she is the objective form of my own Collective Uncousious, especially since my first name is Jordan.
