After drinking beers with a Trappist monks, I experianced an intense existential crisis. Saint John of the Cross (a differant Saint John from the Bible) wrote a very famous book called "The Dark Night of the Soul" a few centuries ago, by which he explained that persons with a spiritual calling often go through such a time.
I developed a dangerous drinking "habit". In a 12 Step meeting, I was introduced to the alchemical works of Carl Gustav Jung, and *immediatly* saw the comparisons with the spiritual philosophy of the Benedictian Trappist monks that I drank beer with.
