Much of the inspiration for this was Greek legend, of the gods (if I remember correctly) Ceres, Apollo, Hermes, and Bacchus. This idea, over time was that in general many foods, especially during certain times of the year, were considered sacred.
Much could be said about that, especially when considering to this day, differant cultures have recipes that have been cooked for many years, usually, in association with significant events in local history, and religious colors and flavors.
